Freya Arde is a German film composer and recording artist who has written music for more than 30 film and TV productions, including The Flying Classroom (directed by Carolina Hellsgård) and the documentary The Hidden Life Of Trees based on Peter Wohlleben’s bestselling book (directed by Jörg Adolph).

Her latest works include the documentary Riefenstahl by Andres Veiel and Spanish language drama Calle Málaga by Maryam Touzani which both premiered at the Venice Biennale.

Growing up in a small village in Eastern Germany pre-internet, music has always been a way for Freya to create other worlds within her mind.
Her academic career started in Dresden where she studied acoustic guitar and classical composition. The Erasmus program allowed her to study in Paris at the renowned Conservatoire National in 2010/2011.
In 2012 Freya won the European Guitar Award as the first female guitarist. She has also been awarded with the German Filmscore Award twice.
She studied film scoring at the film university in Berlin-Babelsberg where she graduated with a master’s degree in 2016.

In 2020 Freya released her first solo EP Spirit Awake, followed by her single Moon Window which was part of the Project XII compilation by Deutsche Grammophon.
She played as an opening act for James Heather’s Germany tour in 2023 and released a joint track Immortal Beloved Rework the same year.
Her debut album E C H O released in 2025 is a collection of 9 songs for string trio, electric guitar, piano and voice.

These achingly beautiful drones and tonal shifts are anchored by the occasional clean tone that refracts into a thousand versions of itself like the ripple of a stone thrown into water.
